My family relies on our annual harvest to support all of our expenses. However, due to recent droughts, my parents have had to spend money to buy water for our crops. Due to this new cost in crop harvesting, my brother and I borrowed money from relatives in order to pay for tuition. Sometimes when my parents fall sick, they choose not to receive medical treatment in order to afford our tuition. They normally wait out the illness and hope that they will recover soon, instead of spending the family’s resources that they have reserved to pay for our tuition. But since my older brother and I both have excellent grades at school, my parents deem the sacrifices to be worth it. I recall one instance at school that made my poverty all the more apparent in comparison to my fellow students. When I first entered middle school, my teacher told me that I could not receive any of the new textbooks because my tuition had not been paid in full. Although unwilling and embarrassed, I passed the new...

Sichuan, China

I have faced many setbacks in my childhood, but I have overcome each with courage and confidence. My only hope for the future is to fulfill my dreams. Ever since I started my education, I have always excelled in school. However, after graduating from elementary school, I overheard my parents tell their neighbors that they planned to discontinue my education after middle school so that I can help out my family with farm work. Upon finding out my parents’ intentions, I was overcome with sadness. However, my relatives persuaded my parents otherwise, and allowed me the opportunity to continue my education. Although it is difficult to make up for the schooling I missed, I am determined to regain my position at the top of my class. I believe that going to school isn’t enough – one must also excel in whatever he or she is learning. I aspire to do well in all of my school subjects so that I can distinguish myself one day. In many places, the school only has access to a single newspaper and absolutely no extracurricular reading or teaching material. In addition, the local average number of years of education is three years less than the national average, and in terms of economic development and agricultural technology, the region is about 20 years behind other places. 60% of the local families live on an income of less than 1000 RMB and therefore cannot afford to buy their own books. WSF Village Teacher Training (教师培训项目)
$300 of $300 donated

Gansu, China

Lack of education in the rural villages lead to systemic poverty. The lack of education is due to the fact that teachers do not have adequate training to provide high quality education to its students. The program breaks the cycle. In providing teachers with adequate training, it can help decrease the gap in education between the cities and rural villages. Plan: 1. Every year from March to May, September to November, with the help of Givology and local partners, we will send passionate, local village education teachers to designated teaching locations. The focus is on organized training for English and Art teachers, two curriculums that lack support and exploration. 2. The purpose of the training is to develop and increase the teacher’s professional and teaching abilities and also encourage interactions among the teachers. 3. By starting to provide training to the local teachers, they can share their skills and talents with other fellow teachers; the goals and objectives of the pr...

Kampala, Uganda

Circle of Peace School project is an educational initiative designed to provide kindergarten and elementary education. Currently, the existing location of the school will be unavailable after December 2009 because the school is being evicted from its existing property. As a result, the school is moving all primary school students to the Upper school where they will have to share space until new shelters can be provided for them. The Circle of Peace School is asking for help to start building structures to allow their students to continue their education. Most of their students are orphans, aids victims whose parents have died, and poor children who can’t afford to pay for education. Currently there are 105 students in the lower school and 100 in the upper school. With these funds, the school will purchase all the necessary materials to begin building.
