Description

From 1998-2002, the Foundation's founder traveled on bicycle to survey villages across China and report on the quality of education.

In 2003, the Beijing Western Sunshine Foundation formally began its operations in reaching out to rural village leaders to support community-driven efforts to improve the quality of education. In 2006, it became the only purely grassroots non-governmental organization recognized by the Chinese government. As a potential driving force behind educational issues in China, the Beijing Western Sunshine Foundation has sponsored a variety of education projects and student scholarships, keeping its focus on grassroots initiatives the core of all of its operations.

- To raise awareness about the lack of attention given to the Western regions of China
- Expand the volunteer base that goes to villages to collect information
- To coordinate efforts to help children in China by posting profiles and publicizing information found in village visits

The village library construction project will benefit the entire local community by providing academic resources and cultural enrichment, spreading education, agricultural knowledge, health awareness and an understanding of the legal system, improving local productivity and promoting local development. Currently, most villages in this region do not have libraries, and even those that do are only equipped with obsolete publications that are of little use. In many places, the school only has access to a single newspaper and absolutely no extracurricular reading or teaching material. In addition, the local average number of years of education is three years less than the national average, and in terms of economic development and agricultural technology, the region is about 20 years behind other places. 60% of the local families live on an income of less than 1000 RMB and therefore cannot afford to buy their own books. Specific funding uses are in local currency are detailed below: 1. B...

Lack of education in the rural villages lead to systemic poverty. The lack of education is due to the fact that teachers do not have adequate training to provide high quality education to its students. The program breaks the cycle. In providing teachers with adequate training, it can help decrease the gap in education between the cities and rural villages. Plan: 1. Every year from March to May, September to November, with the help of Givology and local partners, we will send passionate, local village education teachers to designated teaching locations. The focus is on organized training for English and Art teachers, two curriculums that lack support and exploration. 2. The purpose of the training is to develop and increase the teacher’s professional and teaching abilities and also encourage interactions among the teachers. 3. By starting to provide training to the local teachers, they can share their skills and talents with other fellow teachers; the goals and objectives of the pr...

Short- Term:   Help the impoverished and disadvantaged children’s families in light of their limited time and resources, to help them develop their small children’s enthusiasm for learning and to build community spirit Drive cultural exploration and expose villagers to various systems of education, implementing alternative modes of education like night schooling. During the evenings, village families are not as committed to working on the fields. Gradually move towards a community-based system that relies on a concrete, effective, and sustainable platform positioned for growth   Long- Term: The long-term vision is to move towards a matriarchic system of village education that leverage and develops the local cultural resources- specifically, the family-centered education structure, supporting a healthy and balanced progression.

I am a student from a poor family of a mountainous region, and I am very lucky to be able to attend high school in the county center. My family is from Yangpingguan, where the economy is very backward. My parents are hardworking farmers who don’t have fixed employment. Each year my father leaves the village to find temporary work, while my mother remains to farm. My mother works very hard and suffers a great deal, yet she is still very attentive to my brother and me, especially with regards to our schoolwork. Although my brother’s grades on the 2008 college entrance examinations were not ideal, he has chosen not to abandon his studies, a decision my parents respect. Even though our family is poor, my parents still allow my brother to continue to attend school. In addition to the costly tuition of 5000 yuan per semester, there are also high living expenses, and as a result my family’s financial situation has become more and more pressing. During the May 12th earthquake, my fami...

My family is very impoverished with a very low and unsteady income. My family’s basic living costs, my grandma’s medical bills, and mine and my sister’s tuition all rely on the family’s low income causing great stress for my parents. I’m very, very scared that my parents will not be able to support the entire family, that they’re going to get sick from working overtime, and I’m scared that my sister will need to stop her schooling. But how can I give up? When I see my parents’ haggard faces, their weary bodies, and my sister studying studiously, the feeling I get is one of determination and perseverance. I vow that I will definitely work hard and achieve my goals. I want to develop into a well-rounded person. At school, I always follow the rules, because in my eyes, school is like a sacred place. I have found great happiness in learning and education. I’ve found my self-confidence, and I’ve completely changed from the scared girl who came from the impoverished fa...

My family lives in a small remote mountainous village located in the southern region of the province Shan Xi. In my village, roads are underdeveloped and the local economy is not strong. Despite the situation, the people are willing to persevere and use what they have to change and improve the village little by little. My family’s small farming income can hardly support all of us. We need the income to support the daily needs of our family, my and my brother’s tuition, and the medical bills of my grandfather and mother. My grandfather has already passed away, but when we were trying to treat his illness, my family borrowed a lot of money for his medical bills and is now in debt. Because of the earthquake this year, my house collapsed, and now my entire family lives in a small tent. Recently, the government has implemented a series of rebuilding plans, and my family has borrowed a lot of money for our new home. Seeing my parents struggle has made me feel very bad, which is why I ...

My hometown Guangping is a small village bordering Shanxi, Gansu and Sichuan. Generations of people have spent their lives here, hoping one day to escape from these rocky mountains, to escape poverty. My family, consisting of my grandpa, father, mother and brother, is a poor but close-knit one. My father’s strict teaching disciplined my brother and me; my mother’s warm and hard-working hands brought home happiness and the strength to live. With our parents’ love and support, my brother and I thrived in school. At end of every semester, our good grades and our teachers’ positive comments always brought great happiness to our family. As we grew older and moved up grades, increasing tuition and living expenses put heavy burdens on our family. We depend on our poor land for our income. My father has a severe gastric disease due to overworking when he was younger, so he can’t do much physically demanding work. In order to support my brother and me in school, my mother boarded t...

My family’s financial resources are very limited and we do not have any fixed income. The whole family’s life depends on my father’s temporary jobs outside, but my father has some physical disability and his health condition has been poor this year. My mother stays at home to look after my young brother and takes care of a little crop, but the harvest is not enough for family consumption. Nowadays, my tuition becomes another great burden for my parents. It is very hard for my family to afford the costs. I sincerely hope to that the Fund could help ease my family’s financial difficulties. According to my grandmother, my father was burned by fire when he was young. The four fingers on his left hand were badly burnt; his head was also injured. So he always had disability. I cannot imagine how he managed to get through the cold winters, so I have always admired my father very much. Nevertheless, my father always worked very hard for the family despite his deteriorating health. I...

My family lives in a remote district, neither of my parents has steady work, and our income is not high. For the past few years, because of several reasons, our lives have been especially difficult. In addition, my mother’s health is not good, so in addition to being unable to earn income, she must often see the doctor and buy medicine. Because my father has worked so hard, his health also suffers. Since I have entered high school, my family’s expenditures have increased even more. This year’s earthquake has also led to various losses for our family.
