I have attended Peace Nursery and Primary School from the time I was old enough to enroll in Nursery School. Five years ago my parents died. Since then the School has provided me a place to live, food, medical care, and covered all my educational expenses. I live in a one-room dormitory with 14 other boys. One of the teachers stays in the dorm with us. On holidays I travel to the Village of Mityana to visit my grandmother and see my sisters and brothers. I am the top student in my class. I like to study and am very disciplined. Social studies is my favorite subject. I will graduate from Peace Nursery and Primary School in December 2009. I want to enroll in secondary school and then college but this will depend on finding funding for my education. I would appreciate your help. Note: Peace Nursery and Primary School is a private school serving orphans and other children unable to afford the costs of attending public schools. As such, it receives no funding from public sources. L...

Three years ago my mother died and my father disappeared. My grandmother brought me to Peace School and fortunately, they have provided for me. My days at Peace School begin at 4:00 a.m. when we get up, bathe, dress and brush our teeth. Then we prepare our lessons. Around 7 a.m. we have tea. Classes begin at 7:30 a.m. Lunch is served at 1:00 p.m. We eat matoke, rice and beans that have been prepared in the School kitchen. We eat in an open air dining shed located in the school yard. During recess in the mornings and afternoons we play football and other games. The school day ends at 4: 30 p.m. After dinner we do homework and sometimes chores at the school. By 9:00 p.m. we are in bed for the night. I have studied hard at Peace School and have won some academic competitions. My favorite subject is Social Studies. My best friend is Arnold. We like to study together. If I can achieve my dream of being a doctor I would like to help other orphans. I would appreciate your help in obt...

I come from a family of four girls and one boy. Three years ago my parents died and the Director of Peace School brought me here to live. I don’t know what has become of my sisters and brother, I have not seen them since I came here and I don’t know where they are. I live in the Girl’s Dormitory at Peace School. There are eight other girls here and our teacher Mrs. Oliver. My best friend is Sherin. We pray, talk and study together. On Sunday’s I go with Sherin to church nearby. That is one of the few times I leave the school compound. I like living at Peace School because the teachers are kind and the grounds are kept very clean. Every day we clean our rooms and the playground. We wash our clothes every couple of days. My favorite subject is Science. I hope to be a nurse someday. I would like to help sick people become well. I hope you can help me continue my studies so my dream of being a nurse can come true. Note: Peace Nursery and Primary School is a privat...

When I am in the arms of my mother I feel very brave and I feel that nothing bad will be able to happen because from her I receive a great love. For 15 years I’ve been enjoying life with my family and friends in the city of Tobati. Being an adolescent I’ve discovered that studying is good. God gave me the privilege to study in this marvelous institution. When I’m older I would like to be an agricultural engineer because I’m passionate about nature and I’m worried that people are destroying the environment. With the Institute I am going to move forward because I am confident in myself that I have what it takes to succeed. This school helps me and people like me who come from limited resources and there are a lot of possibilities for the students to be exposed to a wide range of resources -- like books and the internet. In my free time I like to watch movies, listen to music and read poetry. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ About Tobatí :Tobatí is both a town and a provincial d...

Ranjita comes from a family of four. She has a brother. Her father is a construction worker. Her mother is also a construction worker and in the absence of construction work, does odd jobs to sustain the family. The overall annual family income is very low as the jobs are irregular, a problem which has worsened due the current recession. With this income they are able to meet only the family's basic needs and find it difficult to send both of the children to school. Normally, in circumstances like these, the daughter would be pulled from school so her brother might continue. The daughter would then be married off as soon as possible to ease the family's financial burden. Thus by helping Ranjita receive an education, donors can ensure she will have a better future and a chance to help her family through a successful career.

My name is He Yaolan. My family lives in a remote mountain village. There are five people in my family: grandpa, dad, mom, older sister and me. My sister and I are both in school. She attends Li Jiang Secondary Vocational School. I am in 9th grade at Tai An High School. As a result of our geographical surrounding (mountains), our farm revenues are meager. Thus my parents rely on 5 to 6 "mu" (Chinese measure of land area) to support the family financially. My sister and I need about 80 to 100 yuan weekly to cover our expenses. When we are short on money, we have to borrow from our neighbors. We often worry that we can't afford to pay school tuition. My grandpa's health is in poor condition; he is deaf and his vision is severely impaired. He cannot take care of himself and he needs to be looked after daily. My mother is also ill and constantly going to the hospital. At this point, I think our dad is the only one who can support us financially. Because my school is ve...

Kinangop, Kenya
Seven-year-old Alex and his brothers have had a lot to cope with in the past few years. Alex's devoted mother, who was a single parent, died when he was five. In his own words, overheard by Joyce, a matron of the Kinangop Children's Center: "They put my mother in the ground. The covered her with dirt, because she died. There were lots of people all around, and then I am here." Friends and church members only realized she did not have any living family members to take the children in when the memorial service had ended. "The youngest child (Alex), still standing there, did not know who he was supposed to leave with, in which direction to walk," wrote a concerned church member. An appeal was filed with Flying Kites, and later that evening, Alex and his brothers became some of the very first children to be welcomed through our doors. Despite Alex's outgoing personality, he has some behavioral issues that require individual attention. Like many of our oth...

Kinangop, Kenya
Rahab and her older brother Moses were victims of domestic violence. Their grandmother contacted local authorities to report that her daughter, who is mentally disturbed, was abusing her children. Moses was removed from his mother's home after suffering severe burns and other life- threatening injuries. Rahab and Moses became part of the Flying Kites family after their grandmother, who lives in abject poverty, became ill and unable to care for them. During her first few weeks at FKKCC, Rahab refused to leave her brother's side, but after a lot of attention from the matrons, she has joined the other children at nursery school and is slowly beginning to peek out from behind her big brother's shadow.
