Kampala, Uganda

Three years ago my mother died and my father disappeared. My grandmother brought me to Peace School and fortunately, they have provided for me. My days at Peace School begin at 4:00 a.m. when we get up, bathe, dress and brush our teeth. Then we prepare our lessons. Around 7 a.m. we have tea. Classes begin at 7:30 a.m. Lunch is served at 1:00 p.m. We eat matoke, rice and beans that have been prepared in the School kitchen. We eat in an open air dining shed located in the school yard. During recess in the mornings and afternoons we play football and other games. The school day ends at 4: 30 p.m. After dinner we do homework and sometimes chores at the school. By 9:00 p.m. we are in bed for the night.   I have studied hard at Peace School and have won some academic competitions. My favorite subject is Social Studies. My best friend is Arnold. We like to study together.   If I can achieve my dream of being a doctor I would like to help other orphans. I would appreciate your help in obt...
Expansion of Circle of Peace School
$3000 of $3000 donated

Kampala, Uganda

Circle of Peace School project is an educational initiative designed to provide kindergarten and elementary education. Currently, the existing location of the school will be unavailable after December 2009 because the school is being evicted from its existing property. As a result, the school is moving all primary school students to the Upper school where they will have to share space until new shelters can be provided for them. The Circle of Peace School is asking for help to start building structures to allow their students to continue their education. Most of their students are orphans, aids victims whose parents have died, and poor children who can’t afford to pay for education. Currently there are 105 students in the lower school and 100 in the upper school. With these funds, the school will purchase all the necessary materials to begin building. Please click on “view my updates” (under the profile picture) to see pictures of the school and read additional commentary. Mor...
Rehabilitating Former Street-Children
$420 of $750 donated

Nairobi, Kenya

The Turning Point Trust works to prevent and rehabilitate street-children within Africa’s largest slum, Kibera, Kenya. When a child comes from the streets to the Turning Point Project, they bring with them behavioural characteristics that they have learnt in that environment. This behaviour frequently prevents them from immediately returning to school, and a period of rehabilitation is required. Our School Transition Class provides a safe, nurturing, educational environment that enables the child to slowly readjust to a more structured way of life: for example: relating to adults in authority; lengthening their concentration period and adjusting to being within four walls. During this time, our staff work to trace the child’s family and work alongside them to address the problems the family are facing. If appropriate, a parent or guardian might become involved in Turning Point’s Finance Programme, giving them the chance to start a small business and earn a steady income. Each ...
Preventing Domestic Violence
$450 of $450 donated

Sololá, Suchitepéquez , Guatemala

As a 7th grader, Maria is already the most educated woman in her family. She was adopted as a baby and today lives with her mother and 2 younger siblings in a crowded family compound in Santiago, Atitlan Guatemala. Maria’s mother worked tirelessly washing laundry for neighbors to ensure that her daughter got through primary school, and is extremely proud of that achievement. However, she was not able to cover the increased costs of secondary school, and Maria’s academic career appeared over at age 12. Starfish One-by-One found Maria an invited her to participate in the scholarship-mentorship program for young women in secondary school. In her positive peer-support group of 15, Maria quickly rose to be viewed by the others as a leader. She developed a very strong relationship with her Starfish Mentor, Wendy. Maria absorbed the program content like a sponge- particularly the module on personal financial literacy. But halfway through the year, Maria’s participation suddenly start...
Training for Independence
$12000 of $12000 donated

Uttar Pradesh, India

The Mushahar tribe is an extremely disadvantaged community in India. As a dalit (untouchable) group, they are immensely discriminated against in public institutions, especially schools, to the point that they are discouraged from going. This program, known as Training for Independence, provides these Mushahar children with an alternative form of education – in a nonformal education setting with trained teachers (that are, in most cases, more effective than primary government school instructors). In addition to this education, the children will have the opportunity to receive a vocational education, exposure to life in the nearest city (Varanasi, U.P.), as they have never left the village and live extremely traditional lives. The purpose of this program is to give them the set of knowledge that will prepare them for life in the 21st century India – outside of the village – where they are aware of how to interact with people in urban settings, how to run their own small enterpri...
